April Real Estate Newsletter – Celebrating Belle Isle’s Reawakening
Hello friends,
As spring takes hold in Detroit, we’re welcoming back one of the island’s most beloved architectural treasures: the Belle Isle Casino. For lifelong Detroiters like me, this building isn’t a gambling hall at all—it’s a gathering place that has anchored community life for nearly 120 years. Let’s take a moment to celebrate its story and envision our city’s next chapter.
A look back
The original Belle Isle Casino opened in June 1887 as a wood‑framed pavilion that offered respite, food and shelter to park visitors. As Detroit grew, civic leaders commissioned a larger, more durable facility. Van Leyen & Schilling designed the Renaissance‑Revival building we know today; it opened in May 1908 and replaced the 1887 structure. True to the Italian meaning of casino—casa or community house—the building served as a place for meetings, dances and family celebrations. Throughout the 20th century it hosted fairs, weddings and picnics and remained one of Belle Isle’s most popular attractions.
Restoration and grand re‑opening
After years of deferred maintenance, the Belle Isle Conservancy and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) closed the casino in 2023. An extensive restoration followed. A DNR bid document notes that the work included HVAC upgrades, structural repairs, roof replacement, elevator permitting and improvements to the building footprint. Reporter Bre’Anna Tinsley tells us the project also addressed structural beams, added ADA‑accessible walkways and restored the stained‑glass ceiling on the second floor. The stained‑glass medallion was removed, releaded and reinstalled to preserve its beauty.
According to Historic Detroit, the total investment topped $7.3 million. The results are stunning: a weather‑tight roof, modern air‑conditioning and an elevator that meets accessibility standards. The casino reopened with a ribbon‑cutting on March 13, 2026, just in time for Detroit’s 313 Day celebrations. After being closed for three years, the community can once again book this space for weddings, birthdays, reunions and other events.
Celebrating Detroit’s green heart
Belle Isle isn’t just about architecture—it’s a 982‑acre island park that invites us to play, reflect and reconnect with nature. A 5.4‑mile loop trail circles the park, providing spectacular waterfront views of both Detroit and Windsor. Wide paths and wooded trails make this route ideal for leisurely bike rides, morning runs or peaceful walks, and MoGo bike stations near the Aquarium and Beach make it easy to hop on two wheels. When you’re done exploring, you can picnic under mature trees, let the kids enjoy accessible playgrounds and even play a round of golf or tennis. Belle Isle is one of the few places in Detroit where you can watch both sunrise and sunset over the river—catch the dawn near Fisherman’s Pier and end your day at Sunset Point.
